2023-07-31

Editor's note: President Xi Jinping held a series of talks on Friday with foreign leaders who are in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, to attend the opening ceremony of the 31st summer edition of the FISU World University Games. The following are the highlights of the talks.

Mauritania

China and Mauritania should continue to be good friends who support each other and good partners in seeking common development, and jointly safeguard the common interests of both countries and international fairness and justice, President Xi Jinping said while meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani.

Xi hailed the development of bilateral ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations 58 years ago, and said that China appreciates Mauritania's consistent support for China's core interests, and will, as always, support Mauritania in following a development path that suits its national conditions and oppose external forces interfering in Mauritania's internal affairs.

Noting that both countries hold similar or close views on many major international and regional issues, Xi said that they should closely coordinate and cooperate on multilateral platforms, practice true multilateralism and uphold the common interests of developing countries.

Following their meeting, the two presidents witnessed the signing of a cooperation plan between the two countries for promoting the joint construction of the Belt and Road.

Xi said that the cooperation document will help China and Mauritania deepen and expand exchanges and collaboration in various fields.

Ghazouani said that Mauritania and China have a deep friendship and have always been closely united and supportive of each other.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of China sending medical aid teams to Mauritania. The Mauritanian president appreciated China's selfless assistance, especially the great contributions made by Chinese medical teams to the health of the Mauritanian people.

Mauritania firmly pursues the one-China policy and resolutely opposes any words or deeds that violate the one-China principle, he said.

Ghazouani praised the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, saying that these fully comply with the norms of international relations — such as respecting national independence and sovereignty, and promoting exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations.

The initiatives contribute to upholding true multilateralism, promoting world peace, security and common development, and advancing the establishment of a more just and reasonable international order, he said.

Burundi

With multiple challenges and crises in the world, China and Africa need to strengthen unity and cooperation, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries and international fairness and justice, President Xi Jinping said during a meeting with Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye.

Noting that China and Africa have always been a community with a shared future, Xi said that developing solidarity and cooperation with African countries is an important cornerstone of China's foreign policy and a firm strategic choice.

China is willing to provide new opportunities for Africa's development through its own new development, he said.

On China-Burundi relations, Xi said that the two countries have withstood the test of the changes in the international landscape, and they are good friends and good partners who respect each other and develop together.

China firmly supports Burundi in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, opposes external interference, and supports Burundi in pursuing an independent development path, Xi said.

He urged both countries to continue to firmly support each other on issues related to their core interests, and achieve a higher level of mutually beneficial cooperation and common development.

China will accelerate the implementation of major cooperative projects, support the entry of Burundi's agricultural products to the Chinese market at an early date, encourage capable Chinese enterprises to invest in Burundi and help Burundi achieve self-sufficiency and sustainable development in food production, Xi said.

Ndayishimiye said that Burundi appreciates the valuable support from China and regards China as an all-weather cooperative partner in achieving national development. Burundi adheres to the one-China policy and it maintains that Taiwan is an integral part of China, he said.

The Burundian president said that his country opposes double standards on human rights issues as well as interference in the internal affairs of other countries. The cooperation between Africa and China is mutually beneficial, and Burundi is willing to strengthen communication and cooperation with China in regional and international affairs, strengthen solidarity and cooperation between Africa and China, and build a more just and reasonable international order, he said.

Guyana

China and Guyana should be good friends and partners that trust and rely on each other, share opportunities, meet challenges and seek cooperation and common development, President Xi Jinping said in a meeting with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali.

Xi lauded the long-standing friendship between the two nations, noting that Guyana was one of the first countries in the Caribbean region to recognize the one-China principle and establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.

China and Guyana, as two developing countries, should strengthen communication and cooperation, firmly support each other and promote stable bilateral relations for the fundamental and long-term interests of their peoples, he said.

He expressed readiness to lift the level of bilateral cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative with Guyana.

Xi extended a welcoming message to the Guyanese side for taking part in the China International Import Expo to enable more imports from the Caribbean country into the Chinese market.

China will encourage more businesses to invest in Guyana, expand win-win cooperation in areas including energy, mining, finance, agriculture, fisheries and infrastructure development, and jointly foster new growth engines of new energy and green development, he said.

The president urged both sides to strengthen people-to-people exchanges, facilitate mutual travel and visits, and consolidate the foundation of public support for friendship between the two countries.

He highlighted the need for both nations to uphold true multilateralism, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, and jointly address global challenges such as climate change, food security and energy security.

He also expressed his hope that Guyana will continue to play an active role in promoting relations between China and the Caribbean countries.

President Ali said his country highly admires Xi's outstanding leadership and values Beijing's global influence.

Guyana regards China as a highly reliable partner and welcomes Chinese companies to invest and do business in Guyana, he said, adding that his country supports the major initiatives proposed by the Chinese president and will continue to take an active part in the BRI.

Georgia

President Xi Jinping on Friday called on China and Georgia to see their establishment of a strategic partnership as a new start to promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral ties, thus providing a boost to their respective rejuvenation.

Xi made the remarks when meeting with visiting Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. The two countries will issue a joint statement on establishing the China-Georgia strategic partnership during Garibashvili's visit, Xi said.

Xi said China and Georgia should strengthen exchanges between governments and political parties, promote experience sharing in governance and administration, and better understand and support each other on issues concerning their core interests.

He encouraged the two countries to be good friends and partners with mutual respect, mutual trust and equality.

China and Georgia should carry forward their traditional friendship, strengthen exchanges and cooperation in all fields and promote mutual understanding between their peoples, Xi said.

The Chinese president expressed readiness to work with Georgia to give more play to governmental cooperation mechanisms and push forward high-quality Belt and Road Initiative building.

China welcomes more quality exports from Georgia and encourages Chinese enterprises to invest in Georgia, he said.

Noting that the Communist Party of China always cares about the future of humanity, Xi also said that China is willing to work with Georgia, as well as the international community, to jointly address global challenges and build a community with a shared future for humanity.

Garibashvili said the elevation of the two nations' bilateral relationship is of important significance and will bring more opportunities to his country.

He expressed hopes of deepening cooperation in trade, economy and other sectors with China so as to better benefit the two peoples.
