2018-11-19

Recently, China CDM Fund supported the Baihetan and Wudongde Hydropower Station Construction Projects of China Three Gorges Corporation in the form of green bond investment. The two large-scale infrastructure construction projects were approved by the State Council, where both locate at Jinsha River region at the junction of Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces.  The Baihetan Hydropower Station, locating at Ningnan County of Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County of Yunnan Province, is the second cascade hydropower station built on the main streams of the lower reaches of Jinsha River. If the project is completed, Baihetan Hydropower Station will be the second-largest hydropower station in not only China but also the world. The project was fully launched in last August with designed installed capacity being 16 million kilowatts and it’s estimated that the first batch of units would be put into production by 2021, when emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide can be reduced by about 49,530,000 tons, 560,000 tons and 148,600 tons respectively, consumption of coal can be lowered by 19,294,900 tons and power generation will reach 62.443 billion kilowatt-hours on multi-year average.

The Wudongde Hydropower Station locates on reaches that belong to Huidong County of Sichuan Province and Luquan County of Yunnan Province. It is a cascade station built on the most upper stream among the four hydropower cascades on the lower reaches of Jinsha River. If the project is completed, it will be the fourth-largest hydropower station in China ranking just after Three Gorges, Baihetan and Xiluodu hydropower stations and the seventh-largest one in the world. Construction of the project were started in December 2015 with designed installed capacity being 10.2 million kilowatts and it’s estimated that the power generation by the first batch of units would be realized by 2020, when emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide can be reduced by about 311,630,000 tons, 332,000 tons and 93,500 tons respectively, coal consumption can be lowered by 12,140,000 tons and power generation will reach 38.91 billion kilowatt-hours on multi-year average.
