HANOI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The visiting United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appreciated efforts and contributions of Vietnam in the UN when talking with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh in capital Hanoi on Saturday, reported Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA.
The efforts and contributions of Vietnam can be seen in the joining of the United Nations Human Rights Council during the term 2014-2016, in the UN peacekeeping operations, and meeting Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ahead of time among others, the VNA quoted Ban as saying.
At the meeting, the UN chief and Minh agreed on the importance and necessity of adoption of the post-2015 development agenda, sustainable development goals (SDGs) in this September, as well as reaching a new international agreement on response to climate change in this December.
Minh, for his part, said as a country that is mostly hit by climate change, especially the risk of rising sea level, Vietnam has been implementing strong adoption measures.
Vietnam will make active and substantial contributions to reach the above-mentioned goals, the VNA quoted Minh as saying on Saturday.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is paying a visit to Vietnam on Friday and Saturday at the invitation of Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang. Environmental sustainability and climate change is the focus of his trip.
