New hurdle for Green Climate Fund as EU squabbles on board nominees

2016-05-08

Brussels (dpa) - The world's fledgling Green Climate Fund hit a fresh bump in the road Friday, with the European Union unable to agree on who should be nominated to serve on its board.
The board is supposed to hold its first meeting in late April. The EU's presidency, currently held by
Denmark, said it was "confident" a solution could be found "well" before then.
"Discussions within the EU and with representatives of the other developed countries have shown a strong collective commitment to the success of the Green Climate Fund," it said in a statement.
The fund is meant to funnel money to help poor countries adapt to global warming and deploy low-carbon technology.
First approved during 2010 climate negotiations in Cancun, the fund was not formally established until the
Durban talks in December. Its creation has been accompanied by a bidding war over which country should host the new institution and concerns about its financing.
In the EU, meanwhile, it had "not been possible to come to an agreement" on the nominations of board members, the Danish presidency announced on Friday.
The board is supposed to feature 24 members, with developing and developed countries to be equally represented.
Both EU member states and the bloc's executive, the European Commission, have shown "significant interest for representation on the board," the presidency said. But a compromise could not be found" despite willingness to ... adequately share board seats."
The bloc's candidates "will now engage in discussions with the broader group of candidates from other developed countries," the presidency said, declining to identify any of them until the talks were completed.
