UN groups hail Xinhua-led environmental campaign

2016-05-08

BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Three UN groups have hailed Xinhua News Agency's efforts in initiating a joint media campaign aimed at promoting environmental awareness.
"The campaign will have a huge influence in the world and arouse the public's awareness of the environment. It also reflects Xinhua's strong support for the world cause of sustainable development and the Rio+20 summit," the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
China office wrote in a letter to Xinhua on Wednesday.
The UNEP hailed Xinhua's international influence as a major international agency and also called for future partnership with Xinhua.
The campaign, which kicked off on April 22, this year's World Earth Day, saw the participation of Reuters, the UNEP, the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
Xinhua and related institutions will work together to raise the general public's awareness about environmental protection and sustainable development through multimedia reporting and joint photo exhibitions during the campaign, which includes many events on a series of key dates such as World Earth Day on April 22, World Environment Day on June 5 and the Rio+20 summit from June 20-22.
UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres also expressed her appreciation for Xinhua's proposal of this campaign on Twitter, and said the UNFCCC Secretariat was very happy to participate in it.
The UNCCD has released a notice on its website to promote "a land-degradation neutral world by enlightening and educating the public about our land-use account." The message is part of the joint campaign running under the motto of "Global Action, Green Economy Transforming Lives."
The campaign was first advocated by Xinhua President Li Congjun in November 2011 during a meeting with UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.
